Installation of new shutter gates along Nambul River underway

In a step towards flood mitigation, installation of new shutter gates are being carried out along the Nambul River in between Tera Amudon to Kangabam Leikai.
A release issued by Office of MLA, 11-Sagolband Assembly Constituency informed that around 10 gates would be installed under the supervision of Sagolband MLA RK Imo Singh by Sagolband Constituency Progressive Committee (SCPC), to prevent inflow of the water from the Nambul river in residential areas as part of a long-term flood control plan and sustainability of local infrastructure.
Pointing out the old shutter gates were either malfunctioning or have been badly rusted often resulting in various low lying localities facing flood situation frequently, the release stated that the newly installed gates will have rubber linings at the bottom to prevent river water leakage, ensuring better control and protection for nearby residential areas.
Speaking to the media persons, Ward No.7 corporator RK Jiten Singh appealed to the residents of the surrounding areas not to litter or discard plastic bottles and waste into the river or along its banks.
He cautioned that such acts can obstruct smooth operation of the shutters, breach the gates and render installation of the new gates useless.
In addition to installation of the shutter gates, construction of new retaining wall to strengthen the river ban will be taken up at the Moirang Leirak crematorium portion, where the existing wall constructed some 15 to 20 years back is on the verge of collapsing.
The new retaining wall will help prevent erosion and offer greater protection from future floods, the release added.
Further, similar retaining walls will also be constructed along other vulnerable sections of the Nambul River at Amudon, as well as along the Imphal River stretch in Babupara area, to enhance flood protection and erosion control across multiple localities.
