Public awareness helping curb road mishaps: Minister Vashum

The decline in the number of road accident cases in the state could be attributed to increase in awareness among the masses on road rules and adherence to safety norms, said Transport minister Khashim Vashum.
Minister Vashum, who flagged off the half-marathon and fun run organised by the Transport Department from City Convention Centre as part of the National Road Safety Month on Saturday, said that the Department has been striving to spread awareness amongst the people in all the districts of the state.
He continued that the number of road accidents in Manipur has gone down over the past few years compared to other states, mainly due to emphasis on safe driving by the people.
The minister continued that with the rise in population, the traffic volume is also increasing.
As such, he urged the people to obey traffic rules and regulations including following the norms related to one-way, no horn zone and no parking zone.
Organised under theme "Sadak Suraksha - Jeevan Raksha (Road Safety - Safety to Life)�, the event was attended by YAS minister Govindas Konthoujam, Water Resources minister Awangbow Newmai and top officials of the Transport Department.
In all, 200 people participated in the half marathon organised in collaboration with SBI, Indian Red Cross Society Manipur State Branch, Health Department, YAS Department, Traffic Police, and Imphal East and West district administrations.
The 12km long half marathon covered Keishampat and along the Tiddim Road till Malom Oil Depot before taking a U-turn and culminating at City Convention Centre, where the valedictory function of the 36th National Road Safety Month-2025 observance was also held on Saturday.
The function, organised by the Transport Department, was attended by Transport minister Khashim Vashum as chief guest, DGP Rajiv Singh, SBI Imphal regional manager Okendra Singh Khumukcham as guest of honour and Transport secretary Michael Achom as president.
