Senapati, July 29 2024:
All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) and Naga Women's Union (NWU) have strongly condemned the July 26 incident perpetrated on a Naga lady and her six friends at Ocean Lounge near Khuman Lampak, in Imphal East district.
In a condemnation note, ANSAM said that incident happened at about 9 pm at Ocean Lounge, opposite ISBT, wherein one student namely Leishithem Mangkung of Loushing village was harassed by an armed gang at her work place while six others were mercilessly beaten.
One among the six named Sochihan Hungyo of Kashung village was hospitalised due to bullet wound on his head, ANSAM said and strongly condemned such barbaric act of violence against innocent civilians.
According to the condemnation, the continuous ill-famed activities of the armed gangs who are lawlessly operating in the capital city of Manipur and will-fully perpetrated peace loving Nagas in Manipur without sparing even women and innocent students is antithetical in today's democratic society and highly condemnable by all concerned social organisations.
It also called upon the government to initiate prompt and impartial enquiry into the incident and deal stringently in accordance to the law of the land.
Meanwhile, Naga Women's Union (NWU), while condemning the July 26 incident, has written to the Director General of Police, Manipur demanding justice.
In a letter addressed to DGP, NWU president Ch Priscilla Thiumai strongly called for immediate action and befitting punishment of the perpetrators who assaulted Nagas at Ocean Lounge.
The brutal and unrelenting attack was targeted at members of Naga community, resulting in severe physical and psychological trauma to the victims and the Nagas community, it added.
NWU urged the DGP to take immediate and stringent action against the perpetrators while asserting that accused must be brought to justice swiftly to restore the Naga community's faith in the legal system and to deter any future incidents of such nature.
The swift and decisive action by the police will restore the faith in the law enforcing agencies among the public, the NWU said.
According to Newmai News Network, the NSCN-IM has accused the Pambei-led UNLF of attacking a young Naga woman and six others on July 26 in Imphal and asked the former to 'keep a tight rein' on its cadres within the group if at all justice is to be done.
In a statement, NSCN-IM said that it was very unfortunate and shocking to learn of the incident that took place on the night of July 26 at Ocean Lounge, Khuman Lampak, Imphal, where a young Naga lady along with her six friends were physically assaulted with arms by some members belonging to the Pambei-led UNLF.
The way the 'unruly members' of UNLF attacked a young Naga lady who was verbally abused, mishandled and followed by physical molestation and even brandishing fire arms and beating up severely six friends who Came to rescue her is highly condemnable, NSCN-IM said and questioned if it is not a crime to assault, molest and outrage the modesty of a woman.
The act of violence committed against the innocent civilians is not acceptable in our society, NSCN-IM added.
Manipur Naga Youth Organisation; headquarters (MNYO-HQ) also condemned incident and said that targeted violence and harassment towards employees of shops in imphal happen frequently.
Such violence and intimidation toward the Naga minority community in Manipur valley area will directly hurt the last remaining well interwined social fabric nurtured through ages in the present volatile situation.
It said that the incident was sparked by armed militants and their action left seven youths including a lady injured.
MNYO also called upon state authority to take up befitting stringent legal action against those armed miscreants involved in violence and shooting incident.
