Workshop on anti-ragging held at Mt Everest College

Senapati, September 27 2015: Executing the order from University grants Commission (UGC) in curbing the menace of ragging in higher educational institutions, the anti-ragging cell of Mt Everest College, Senapati conducted a one-day workshop on anti-ragging.

Niomchung Jatak Chiru, Assistant Professor of Physics attended the workshop as the resource person.

The cell including the college lecturers and students participated in the workshop.

Earlier, the UGC had notified regulations on curbing the menace of ragging in higher educational institutions to all Principals of all the colleges in the North East Region in order to prohibit, prevent and eliminate the scourge of ragging.

In the workshop, the resource person explained that ragging is a damaging form of interaction of the seniors in colleges/schools with the juniors, newcomers or first year students.

The acts of ragging can be mental/physical/sexual abuse, verbal abuse, indecent behaviour, criminal intimidation/wrongful restraint, undermining human dignity, financial exploitation/extortion or use of force, he cited.

Niomchung Jatak Chiru said that practice of familiarising the beginners with their seniors has now turned into a potent tool for ill-treating and punishing the poor/weaker students if they fail to obey the seniors.

Under the pretext of fun, a poor student might be often assaulted, sometimes even stripped and intimidated by his seniors and this ritualised torture leaves an indelible impression on the mind of the junior student.

The chilling incident continues to haunt him throughout his life and unknowingly, the junior student might develop various psychological disorders, he said.

In compliance with the order given by the UGC, the college has instituted an Anti-Ragging Cell including the Anti-Ragging Committee, Mentoring Cell and the Anti-Ragging Squad to ensure compliance with the provision of UGC regulation, 2009 at the college level and to monitor and observe the performance of anti-ragging squad in prevention of ragging in the institution.

To this, the Vice Principal of the college had already submitted a memorandum to the Joint Secretary, Anti-Ragging Cell, UGC.

Every student of the institution is also directed to file an affidavit with the signature of their parents vowing not to indulge in ragging.
