Imphal, June 26 2024:
JNIMS Teachers' Association has appealed to the state government to adhere to the guidelines of National Medical Council (NMC) and JNIMS Service Rules while appointing the new director of the institute.
Addressing a joint press meet of JNIMS teachers and faculty held in front of the administration block of the medical institute on Wednesday, Association secretary Dr Kumarjit said that after years of intense efforts, the lone government medical institute in the state is now on par with medical institutions in other states.
The Institute currently has 150 MBBS seats, PG courses for all departments and dental college.
As the term of the present director is lapsing in August this year, he urged authority concerned to appoint the new director as per the guidelines of NMC and the JNIMS Service rules.
According to the notification published by NMC in the Indian Gazette, an individual applying for the post of dean/director/principal in medical institute must possess a post graduate medical degree from a recognised medical institute and should have worked for 10 years as a professor/ associate professor in a medical college/institute, with a minimum of five years working as a professor.
On top of this, the JNIMS Service Rules state that the appointment should be made on seniority cum merit basis.
As NMC conducts surprise visits from time to time to inspect the infrastructure and faculty of the medical institute, efforts have been taken up to prevent any mistake on part of the institute, he added.
Dr Kumarjit further mentioned that as per a notification issued on June 7, to ensure transparency in the operation of the institute, all existing infrastructure and faculty and MBBS courses should be in the public domain.
Amid this, if the newly appointed director fails to meet the NMC criteria, it is possible that the recognition of JNIMS could be cancelled.
This would in turn affect the career and life of the students.
Thus, he appealed to the authority concerned to ensure that the NMC guidelines and JNIMS Service Rules are strictly adhered to while appointing the new director of the institute.
