Consumers' Club calls for reviving Consumer Council

The dissolution of Consumer Protection Council, which is required under the Consumer Act, has deprived the consumers from exercising their rights, said Consumers' Club Manipur president T Phulachand Sharma.
He made the statement on the occasion of National Consumer Rights Day-2024 observed by Consumers' Club Manipur at Merit Scholar English School, Uchekon on Tuesday.
Organised under the theme Fair and Responsible AI (Artificial Intelligence) for customer, the observance was.also attended by School founder Heikrujam Sushila Devi as presidium members.
Phulachand recalled that the Manipur State Consumer Protection Council was established when the Consumer Act, 1986 came into effect.
However, the Council was dissolved in 1992-1993.It was revived during the term of former minister Pheiroijam Parijat but dissolved again after remaining defunct for a long time.
The dissolution of the Council has prevented consumers from exercising their entitled rights, he said, and urged for the government to take up steps to revive the Council.
He informed that under the Consumer Act, 2019, there are six different consumer rights, though many in the state are unaware of the same.
Consumers' Club has been working to make the public aware about their rights but the governments lackadaisical attitude is demotivating, he remarked and stressed the need for including information about consumer rights in Class IX and X syllabi.
During the observance, Poknapham columnist and senior advocate Dr Chongtham Narendra spoke on Consumer rights', State Weight and Measures Department's Sanabam Suraj on Package Commodities Act', and Food Safety Department's Dr L Kripriyalakshmi on Food Safety Act' .
