Imphal, May 23 2025:
The All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' & Motor Workers' Union (AMRTDMWU) has threatened to launch a "steering down strike" if the Government fails to reopen its Sekmai branch office.
Speaking to the media, AMRTDMWU general secretary Maimom Anil Meitei stated that the police had forcefully closed the union's Sekmai branch office on March 20 .
He said that drivers, including non-locals, have been approaching the union's head office with complaints of serious inconveniences while travelling along the Sekmai-Imphal route since the branch office at Sekmai was closed.
Saying that the drivers have been complaining about police, traffic police, and motor vehicle personnel collecting illegal taxes, wrongfully detaining them, and issuing hefty challans, he added that drivers lack a platform to air their grievances with the Sekmai branch office closed.
He urged authorities to reopen the office promptly, warning that failure to do so would lead to a "steering off strike" .
