85th Raising Day of Assam Regiment observed

Imphal, June 15 2026:
The 85th Raising Day of the Assam Regiment was commemorated today with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Assam Regiment War Memorial near Babupara traffic point, opposite the CM Secretariat, Imphal.
Organised by 165 Infantry Battalion (TA) (H&H) Assam under IGAR (South), the event honoured the valour and sacrifice of fallen soldiers.
IG, IGAR (South) Major General Gaurav Sharma, SC, SM, led the tributes alongside Col Samir Bharti, SM, CO of 165 Infantry Battalion (TA), Col (retired) Puyarn Gopendra, Secy RSB, Col (retired) Sapam Shanti, and Col (retired) HG Singh.
Veterans of the Assam Regiment from Imphal and serving Army personnel also attended.
Raised on June 15, 1941, at Shillong under Lt Col Ross Howman to counter the Japanese invasion during World War n, the Regiment embodies the martial spirit of Northeast India.
It draws troops from Meiteis, Nagas, Kukis, Mizos, Assamese, and Gorkhas.
In World War II, the 1st Battalion earned acclaim in the Burma campaign, fighting at Jessami, Kohima.
and Arakan to halt the Japanese advance, securing six Battle Honours and the "Burma" Theatre Honour.
