AMDWA conference pitches for 33 pc reservation

All Manipur Democratic Women Association (AMDWA) convened its 7th Manipur Conference at GM Hall here on Sunday and passed a resolution containing several points including 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislative assemblies and deployment of security at work places having women employees.
The conference began after AMDWA's senior member M Randhoni Devi unfurled the flag and paying floral tributes to departed leaders of the association, which is functioning as a unit of All India Democratic Women Association (AIDWA).
Taking part in the conference, former MP and former member of National Women Commission and AIDWA president professor Malini Bhattacharjee said that women of the country particularly those in Manipur need to keep strict vigil of RSS supported BJP governments at the Centre and in the state.
She also said that women remain the main victims in the present situation in the country as well as in the state even as the association is demanding an egalitarian society.
According to Malini, democracy is at its lowest level at present in the country and one key reason for this has been huge mistake in country's electoral system.
The association has been demanding equal representation, she said while maintaining that women of the country should safeguard secularism and rights guaranteed under the Constitution.
AIDWA general secretary Mariyam Dhawale, who also attended the conference, said that women of Manipur successfully tackle wrong doers in the society and AIDWA supports women movement in Manipur as the association strives to bring improvement in conditions of women.
The conference later appointed 17 office bearers of the state committee including Ch Sundari, Asem Binodini, Ayekpam Ashalata, H Ranjita and Yumnam Chandrabali Leima as president, secretary, joint secretaries and treasurer respectively.
The Conference also passed resolution for stopping of price hike, deployment of security at work places having women employees, free and compulsory education for women, more participation of women in MGNREGS, stopping crime against women and complete repeal of AFSPA.
On Saturday, AMDWA held its 7th general body meeting at the hall of Manipur Dramatic Union (MDU), Yaiskul Police Lane here.
During the meeting resolutions were adopted to urge authorities concerned for ensuring 30 per cent seat reservation for women in the State Assembly; taking up safety measures for school/ college-going female students and working women at their respective institutions; staging democratic protest against the rising prices of daily essential items; urge the union home minister to withdraw his earlier announcement of making Hindi compulsory till Class X and instead make it optional; to make free and compulsory education for girls till master level; disbursement of scholarships for students belonging to weaker sections; increasing MGNREGA wages, and lastly, increasing the total number of work days of the scheme to 200 days.
