Household wastes could be turned into wealth: MPCB secretary

Imphal, February 09 2025: Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) member secretary Dr W Roshan stated that problems arising out of pollution in the state could be reduced and addressed effectively if everyone realises that daily household wastes could be converted to wealth through proper disposal and turning them into natural manures.

Speaking at the inauguration session of a two-day workshop on 'Zero waste: Composting, recycling and alternative to single use plastic' organised by MPCB at Heirok Part-II in Thoubal district Sunday, Dr W Roshan noted that pollution is having serious adverse impact on both humans and natural environment.

However, level of pollution could be reduced in case daily household wastes and plastics could be recycled, which in turn would help generate additional income through proper segregation at source and storage.

As many of the discarded household items could be used in the manufacture of natural manures success in such initiatives could reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers, he added.

The workshop organised in collaboration with volunteers of Eco-Network Manipur commenced with collection of plastic wastes from the workshop venue, making of fertilizer and tree plantation.

The inaugural session was also attended by MPCB information officer Laishram Homenjoy, assistant environment officer M Bangajit, Path Finder Manipur president M Basaraj and Eco-Network Manipur president L Shithangamba.
