World Environment Day observed across state

Imphal, June 05 2025:
In connection with the observance of World Environment Day-2025, wide range of Environmental activities were carried out across the districts since May 25 till Thursday.
At Maklang village in Imphal West, over 500 members of Youth Development Club and local village committee planted over 1000 saplings apart from a bike rally featuring environmental slogans, speeches by village elders and local women.
In Tengnoupal, Chandel and Kakching districts, 300 indigenous saplings such as Neem, Bamboo and Jackfruit trees were planted in schools and public spaces, along with distribution of 100 saplings to households to promote home gardening.

A poster making competition at Chongjang Primary School saw 30 students creatively expressing their environmental concerns while a lecture on "Transforming Kitchen Waste into Compost" at Moreh educated locals on sustainable waste management practices.
At Joupi village in Chandel district, villagers and school children carried out tree plantation drive emphasising on ecological responsibility and community participation.
The event reinforced the importance of grassroots efforts in building a greener and more sustainable future.
In the Sehlon region, encompassing villages such as Sehlon, Old Samtal, New Samtal, Phoilen, Hengkot, Hengkot Kovang and Aibol Joupi, a three-day campaign was conducted from June 3 wherein cleanliness drives, environmental poster campaigns and awareness lectures on sustainable living were conducted.
The event culminated with planting of 980 saplings by over 470 participants including women and children, underscoring community ownership and shared responsibility for a greener tomorrow.

Similarly, at Sajik Tampak, a tree plantation drive and a drawing competition were conducted with students and teachers of Jamkholun Memorial Academy while at Sangaikot village in Churachandpur district, a day-long observance included planting of over 200 saplings, cleanliness campaign and innovative use of waste plastic to make eco-friendly baskets.
In Kamjong and Ukhrul districts, mass tree plantations were launched during which local village leaders and children from a nearby orphanage planted over 1500 native saplings.
The drive was complemented, by sensitisation sessions on the importance of environmental conservation, urging the community especially the youth to act as stewards of nature.
