Imphal, January 04 2025:
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a warning against usage of newspapers for packing, serving, and storing food items due to significant health risks.
According to FSSAI, roadside vendors, local hotels and vendors regularly use newspapers to wrap the foot items.
However, it highlighted that the ink used in newspapers contains harmful materials including bioactive substances which can contaminate the food and cause serious health issues.
Thus, FSSAI directed the state food authorities to closely monitor the matter and take up all necessary responsibilities.
Meanwhile, despite knowing that using newspapers to pack the food items is harmful to health, in Manipur's context, no particular body had spread awareness of the same or taken up requisite measures.
