Senapati, June 03 2025:
The office picketing agitation of All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) against forcible border fencing and scrapping of Free Movement Regime (FMR) took an ugly turn on Tuesday as student leaders overturned official vehicle and vandalised office of the Senapati SP .
ANSAM launched office picketing stir across Naga inhabited hill districts of Manipur from June 2 with the protest in Senapati district supported by Senapati District Students' Association (SDSA) and its federating units including Mao Students' Union (MSU), Maram Students' Union (MKS), Poumai Naga Students' Union (PNTM), Thangal Students' Union (TAJ) and Zeliangrong Students' Union, Senapati Zone (ZSU-SZ) .
During the protest on Tuesday at Senapati district headquarters, the official vehicle of the Superintendent of Police (SP) was overturned by the irate student leaders apart from vandalising office of the SP .
According to sources, non-compliance by the Senapati SP to the agitation and the officer's alleged order to the security personnel to load their weapons led to a confrontation and the student leaders overturning the SP's vehicle.
The students later vandalised the SP's office resulting in partial damage.
Addressing media persons after the incident, SDSA president Saloni Tony said a team of student leaders of ANSAM and SDSA were enforcing the 48-hour office picketing at Mini Secretariat, Senapati on Tuesday and an unfortunate incident happened due to alleged provocation by the SP since Monday.
The SP should be guardian and understand pulse of the people of the district but provoked student leaders by deploying additional central armed forces since Monday, maintained the president.
He alleged that the SP increased the scale of provocation by issuing order to security forces to load service weapons and threatened student leaders.
In response, students overturned the SP's vehicle, Saloni Tony said and also condemned the role of the additional SP (Law & Order) in escalating the situation.
The SDSA president also demanded unconditional apology from the SP Senapati and transfer of the SP and additional SP within 48 hours.
ANSAM vice president Bosco Kashung also informed media persons that office picketing protest in all Naga hill districts went peaceful but an unfortunate incident happened in Senapati on Tuesday due to provocation by the SP and security forces.
