GP college students protest bomb threat

Despite heavy deployment of security teams, unidentified persons placed a hand grenade at the gate of Ghanapriya (GP) Women's College, here with a warning note under the explosive device, an act impromptu protested by students of the all-girl college.
According to a police report, passers-by spotted the grenade around 5 am Monday and reported the same to the police.
A team of Imphal police station arrived to the spot and safely retrieved the grenade.
Beneath the explosive device, the police found a note that read, "Down with fascist education system, honour the right of proletarian students' free education movement, Glory to the proletarian students".
Subsequently, Imphal PS has registered a case in this regard.
Meanwhile, students of the College staged a sit-in protest at the gate on Monday, condemning the grenade threat.
Speaking to newspersons on the sidelines of the sit-in, 5th semester student Thokchom Yaiphabi Chanu condemned the incident, and expressed concern about the students' ability to study freely amid such a threat in an area having heavy security presence.
During the protest, the students also held placards inscribed with the slogans, "Make educational institutions a disturbance-free zone", "We condemn bomb threats at educational institutions", "Talk with authorities concerned for any dissatisfaction", and "We oppose any bomb threats against our college".
GP Women's College is located less than 100 metres from the Raj Bhavan amd about 300 metres from the CM's bungalow.
According to reports, senior police officials with a huge contingent of police personnel rushed to the spot and with the help of a bomb squad, removed the live hand grenade and averted a major incident.
The incident comes amid reports of several educational institutions in Imphal valley receiving extortion threats and arrest of militants belonging to different outfits on the charge of extorting money from people and traders.
