Sit-ins protest arrest of village volunteers

Denouncing the arrest of village volunteers, who went to Sangaiyumpham Cherapur Mathak Leikai to seize drugs in endorsement of the state government's 'War on Drugs' campaign, by the police, All Wangjing, Lamding, Kairembikhok Clubs' Organisation and Meira Paibi staged organised a sit-in protest at Wangjing-Heirok Lamkhai (road junction) with a similar demonstration also organised by Khongjom Circle Apunba Meira Paibi at Khongjom on Wednesday.
Two village volunteers, namely Narengbam Gobin (38), son of Ibomcha of Wangjing Lamding Keithel, and Moirangmayum Romantic (28), son of Prem of Wangjing Wangkhei, were arrested by Thoubal district police commando on August 26 night.
Several resolutions were adopted during the protests including demand for unconditional release of the two village volunteers and launch of intense protest if the duo remains under detention.
The protestors used placards inscribed with slogans like 'Release the village volunteers unconditionally', 'We condemn arrest of those proactively involved in anti-drug campaigns', 'We condemn arrest of village volunteers', 'We condemn inaction against drug dealers and abusers', etc.
