Imphal, July 26 2024:
Socialist Students Union of Manipur (SSUM) secretary general Thiyam Bikash Luwang has urged the state government to appoint a new secretary of Board of Secondary Education, Manipur (BSEM) prior to commencement of the upcoming Assembly session.
Addressing the media at Union's Lalambung office, here, on Friday, Bikash accused the state government of undermining the proposal for appointment of the secretary of BSEM.
While remarking that there would be no need for the people to launch agitation if the government acts in a timely manner, the general secretary reasoned that SSUM did not react when an additional director in the Education Department was appointed as BSEM secretary as the Class X examination was underway regardless of the fact that the Union had been urging for appointment of the BSEM secretary for a long time.
Recounting that SSUM had also submitted a memorandum to the government earlier for appointing the new secretary of BSEM, Bikash contended lack of attention on part of the Education Department to the various government schools has resulted in mass chaos.
Instead of focussing on this issue, the additional director is assigned to look after the works of BSEM, which is not a smart step on the part of the government, he remarked.
Stating that the prolonged silence of the government is basically against the student community, Bikash also regretted that in-spite of being aware about the prevailing unrest situation affecting every sector, particularly education, there is no sign that appointment of the new secretary will be effected soon.
Thus, he urged the government to appoint a new secretary for BSEM ahead of the Assembly session in the interest of the students.
