Imphal, October 17 2024:
Persons With Disabilities commissioner Waikhom Birahari has proposed creation of post of Sign Language instructors in educational institutions across the state.
Birahari made the suggestion during the observance of International Day of Sign Language at Wangkhei Koijam Leikai community hall on Thursday.
The observance was organised by the Deaf Welfare Organisation Manipur, which also coincided with 18th foundation day of the Organisation.
"Sign language is the primary means for individuals with speech and hearing impairments to interact with others," said Birahari in his address as the chief guest.
He also acknowledged significance of sign language in communication.
The commissioner, however, regretted that in Manipur there is no institution or platform available for people to learn sign language, which often results in significant challenges for those with speech and hearing impairments when they visit government offices.
To address these issues; Birahari stressed the need to create posts for sign language experts and instructors in educational institutions.
He also suggested that at least one employee in every government department should be adequately trained to assist individuals who are mute and deaf, ensuring they receive the necessary support and services.
The commissioner also disclosed that the government had been urged to create positions for sign language instructors in educational institutions along with informing that a national level review meeting on sign language held recently had prominent discussion on necessity of establishing such posts.
The observance function was also attended by Social Welfare deputy director L Dhanabir, CRCSRE director N Khoibi and Jimmy Thangjam of Indubrium Institute Foundation as guests of honour.
