Imphal, January 17 2025: The 84th birth anniversary observance of theatre director Heisnam Kanhailal along with golden jubilee celebration of his play 'Pebet' commenced from Friday at Chandrakirti Auditorium, Palace Compound Imphal.

The observance, jointly organised by Kalakshetra Manipur, and Departmentof Art and Culture, will continue for three days.

Art and culture commissioner Mongjam Joy, Kalakshetra Manipur president W Gokulchandra and retired JAS Dr RK Nimai attended the inaugural function as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

Kanhailal's classic play 'Pebet' was also staged as part of the commemorative event.

In his address, M Joy expressed concern over the losing ground of theatre in the state and called for more proactive measures to promote the art form.

He highlighted the intrinsic values of theatre and how it help in shaping the society by acting as a mirror.

Meanwhile, RK Nimai called 'Pebet' as a classic and powerful play with full of messages that still suits the contemporary society.

In its 50 years of journey, almost all of the artistes have changed but Heisnam ongbi Sabitri, who plays the lead role, is still preserving her place in the play with full vigour and it is one of her most valuable strength as an artiste, he observed.

Artistes who have played roles in the play in its 50 years of journey were honoured by presenting citations and shawls.

A memorial lecture on the late theatre director Heisnam Kanhailal will be held along with a screening of a 45 -minute documentary film on the second day on Saturday.

The last day will feature Kalakshetra's popular play 'Keibu Keioiba' .
