Thokchom Bira remembered

The yearlong birth centenary celebration of revolutionary Thokchom Bir concluded today at Keishampat Lairembi Community Hall.
The function was organised by ICC Manipur and Birth Centenary Celebration Committee.
MSC-CPI senior leader Langol Iboyaima, ICC Manipur chairman Dr M Nara, MSC-CPI secretary A Nabachandra, AITUC Manipur president S Yaima, ICC Manipur vice chairman L Sotinkumar.
ICC Manipur secretary M Jaykumar, L Thoiren, former Councillor of IMC Th Bhanumati and Manipur Keithel Nupi Marup general secretary Laishram Memma attended as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Celebration Committee member Thokchom Suresh said revolutionary Thokchom Bira was the immediate successor of Jananeta Irabot and his 100th birth anniversary has been observed for one year with various programmes.
He said Bira took active part in movements demanding statehood for Manipur, played a major role in the movement for inclusion of Manipuri language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution and also worked for protection of Nupi Keithel.
The present generation must be made aware of Bira's contributions, he said, adding that if Manipur had a leader like him today, peace could be brought back in the State.
