Imphal, March 15 2022: Consumers' Club, Manipur observed World Consumer Rights Day on the theme 'Fair digital finance' at GM hall here on Tuesday.

Addressing the observance as chief guest, Horticulture and Cooperation joint secretary and Manipur Lokayukta secretary Ranjan Yumnam said that people are all consumers.

During the election also, the voters are a kind of consumer, he explained, while pointing out ensuring rights of the consumers is sign of good governance.

Informing that 27 blocks in the state does not have adequate banking infrastructure, Ranjan maintained that activities for development of infrastructure have been taken up to avail the facilities to the people effectively.

Consumers' Club president T Phulchand said that consumers are yet to avail their rights under Consumer Act effectively.

Consumer Protection Act, 2019 has been enforced and consumer protection authority set up in the state to punish those violating the rights of the consumers, he informed.

Pointing out that the state should have district and state commissions to address complaints of consumers, he regretted that the government is yet to form a commission and appoint its president and members.

As such, consumers could not file their complaints, thus making the Consumer Act and assurance of consumers' rights obsolete.

It is necessary on the part of the government to ensure consumers' rights to its people, he added.

Highlighting the need to know about the consumers' rights by both buyers and sellers, he said that they should not do dupe the consumers.

Moreover, consumers should know how to raise complaints if their rights are violated.

Around 60 entrepreneurs attended the event.

District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Tamenglong also observed World Consumer Rights Day virtually in collaboration with DLSA, Imphal West on Tuesday.

In a release, DLSA Tamenglong secretary Dr Laishram Rina Devi informed that the programme sponsored by Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) under the aegis of National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) was attended by PLVs, panel lawyers and LACs of Tamenglong, Noney and Imphal West districts.
