SHRI aids Agartala hospital conduct kidney transplant

AGMC & GB Pant Hospital in Agartala successfully conducted its first kidney transplant on July 8, 2024, with Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI) contributing to the historic achievement.
According to a release of SHRI, a highly experienced 12-member SHRI team consisting of Dr Guliver Potsangbam (consultant nephrologist), Dr Somorendro Paonam (consultant urologist), Dr Mahele Maharabam (consultant urologist), Dr Dinesh Thounaojam (consultant anaesthetist), Dr Kennedy Taiyenjam (consultant anaesthetist), Dr Rukku M (DNB trainee, anaesthetist), Santosh Shekhar (general manager), Ingobi Thiyam (OT technician), Naresh Ngangom (OT technician), Thabumhal Leimapokpam (OT nurse), Premkumar Phijam (OT nurse), and Rishap Shougrakpam (OT nurse), collaborated with local doctors for Tripura's first successful kidney transplant at AGMC & GB Pant Hospital.
A reception ceremony 'Shija Team Mission Tripura' was held at the SHRI Auditorium here on Friday to celebrate this achievement.
The journey toward this achievement began with a meeting on January 29, 2024.Chaired by AGMC's principal and attended by the medical superintendent and head of department, the meeting set the foundation for collaboration between AGMC & GB Pant Hospital and Shija Hospitals.
Following this, from February 6 to 17, 2024, a multidisciplinary team from AGMC & GB Pant Hospital, including an urologist, nephrologist, anaesthesiologist, clinical psychologist, nursing officer, and OT technician, underwent comprehensive training at the Shija Institute of Kidney Sciences.
During the training, the team observed three live kidney transplants, gaining firsthand experience in the procedure.
On May 4, 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed, formalising the partnership and underscoring a shared commitment to mentor kidney transplant services in Tripura, the release further said.
Since 2016, Shija Hospitals has been a pioneer in kidney transplant advancements in Northeast India.
The hospital has achieved significant milestones, including the region s first ABO-incompatible transplant in October 2021 and the first deceased donor transplant in August 2023.Shija Hospitals has performed 114 kidney transplants to date, including 3 deceased donor transplants, showcasing its expertise and dedication to comprehensive kidney care, it continued.
Shija Hospitals is equipped with state-of-the-art dialysis technologies and has 41 machines, providing comprehensive treatment for kidney diseases.
With a dedicated team of full-time nephrologists and urologists, the hospital ensures high-quality care, conducting the highest number of haemodialysis sessions in the Northeast region at 140 per day.
The hospital has provided over 84,533 CMHT and 52,060 PMJAY dialysis sessions, demonstrating its commitment to patient welfare.

SHRI launched the 'Shija Kidney Care' card in March 2024, offering exclusive benefits to registered individuals with chronic kidney disease or a history of renal transplants, further supporting patient welfare, according to SHRI.
"Shija Hospitals has been recognised as a key referral centre for kidney transplants by the governments of Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura.
Its role in promoting Manipur as a medical tourism hub is significant, attracting patients from across the region.
The hospital has completed two kidney transplants for international patients and six from Nagaland," said SHRI.
"Moving forward, Shija Hospitals remains committed to mentoring the local team in Tripura until they can independently perform kidney transplants.
