Imphal, May 08 2024: The month-long observance of World Red Cross Day, 2024 organised by Manipur State Branch of Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) on the theme of "I give with joy, and the joy I give is a reward", concluded at the Society's MG Avenue office, here, on Wednesday.

Governor Anusuiya Uikey, who attended the closing function as the president of IRCS Manipur launched a website of the Society (www.redcrossmanipur.org) and also released a souvenir.

Moreover, she presented prizes for various competitions conducted earlier.

The prizes included cash, memento and certificates.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Anusuiya highlighted the selfless humanitarian services rendered by the World Red Cross Society, and said that observance of such a day like World Red Cross Day gives an opportunity to recognise the remarkable work of its volunteers and staff.

The volunteers of Red Cross society are more concern about the welfare of needy, elderly people, hospitalised and physically challenged people than their own well-being, the Governor observed, while adding that through its commitment of providing humanitarian assistance, Red Cross Societies across the globe reach out to over 200 million people each year.

Its field of action covers human distress in all its forms, she added.

The Governor stated that the Red Cross Society is effective in its humanitarian response and grassroots communication as it is an organisation which is strongly anchored in local communities.

She also paid homage and expressed gratitude to Sir Jean Henry Dunant, the founder of Red Cross and the joint recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize, for giving the world such a noble organisation and commended the Red Cross volunteers for helping alleviate human suffering and bringing joy everywhere for everyone and showing relentless commitment to the ideals of the movement.

Reflecting on the on-going ethnic strife in Manipur, the Governor lauded the selfless activities rendered by IRCS, Manipur Branch in all the affected districts by reaching out to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) staying in relief camps and distributing essentials relief materials.

She also informed that many relief materials were provided from the national branch after intervention by the office of Governor to the President of India and union health minister during meetings in New Delhi last year.

Governor Anusuiya also announced financial assistance for IRCS, Manipur State Branch, while further mentioning the financial assistance extended by her office to IRCS, Senapati branch for purchase of well-equipped ambulance earlier today.

It may be mentioned here that as part of the observance, IRCS Manipur organised a series of events during the month of April, including first aid training, written quiz & recitation competitions, blood donation programmes, blood donation at Blood Centre, JNIMS and RIMS, painting competitions, folk song competition of school and college students, and meeting with the leaders of CSOs, student organisations, Meira Paibis and various local leaders.

IRCS Manipur State vice-president Dr RK Nimai Singh, chairman Narendra Ningomba, secretary Athokpam Nabachandra and members of the Society also attended the programme.

Meanwhile, IRCS Imphal East District Branch concluded its month-long observance of World Red Cross Day on the theme of 'Keeping Humanity Alive', at JNIMS Blood Centre and Transfusion Unit, on Wednesday.

The closing function was also attended by Art and Culture deputy director G Dharma-das Sharma as chief guest, IRCS Imphal East District Branch chairman Dr N Amulkumar as president and JNIMS Blood Centre MO in-charge Dr Surjit Konsam as guest of honour.

As part of the function, a blood donation camp was organised, where four most regular donors along with the participants of the camp were honoured with simple gifts.

IRCS Imphal West District Branch also concluded the month-long observance of World Red Cross Day on the theme of 'Keeping Humanity Alive', at the Home for the Blind, run by Welfare Association for the Blind Manipur in Takyel on Wednesday.

During the function, food items were distributed and rooftops of hailstorm affected houses repaired along with conduct of a dental camp.
