Imphal, July 05 2024:
In a historic moment for Manipur and the Northeast region, Inner MP Prof Bimol Akoijam's fiery maiden speech in the Parliament on June 2 has reverberated across the nation, compelling Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his prolonged silence on the Manipur crisis, according to the Manipur International Youth Centre (MIYC) .
The Centre also lauded Bimol's speech as a watershed moment that highlighted an unprecedented critique of Delhi's neglect towards the state and the region at large.
Bimol Akoijam, in his address, began by underscoring the significant time zone difference between Delhi and Northeast India, symbolising the longstanding detachment and negligence felt by the people of Manipur since its annexation into the Indian Dominion in 1949.His words resonated deeply, accusing Central leaders of perpetuating a colonial mindset towards the Northeast even seven decades after independence, labelling it as the "otherness of India" .
MIYC observed that central to Inner MP Prof Bimol Akoijam's critique was the systemic absence of Northeast history from textbooks and the continued treatment of Northeast people as outsiders within their own country.
He boldly challenged the Prime Minister, asserting that he would maintain his silence only after Modi addressed Manipur's plight directly - a challenge that eventually forced Modi to respond.
In his subsequent speech in the Rajya Sabha, PM Modi acknowledged the severity of the situation in Manipur, citing over 500 arrests and 11,000 FIRs hied amid the ongoing conflicts.
However, MIYC noted his omission of critical issues such as ethnic cleansing against the Meeteis, the resettlement of internally displaced persons, and allegations of partiality by Central armed forces.
MIYC commended Bimol Akoijam for transcending party lines to amplify the unheard voices of the Northeast, positioning him as an iconic figure representing Manipur's aspirations on a national stage.
It emphasised his unwavering commitment to preserving the state's cultural identity and rejecting any attempts to impose external narratives or constitutional amendments that could destabilise/disintegrate the state.
His speech not only sparked national discourse but also exposed the complex dynamics of federalism and democratic governance in the Northeast.
It underscored the longstanding grievances of Manipuri people, exacerbated by militarisation and perceived marginalisation in the decision-making processes that affect their daily lives.
The appointment of former DG of CRPF Kuldiep Singh as the security advisor was met with scepticism, seen as potentially exacerbating human rights violations against indigenous communities like the Meeteis.
They argued that such appointments further centralised power and hindered the effective functioning of the state's elected democratic institutions, which are already strained amid ongoing crisis.
Furthermore, his critique extended beyond immediate security concerns to address broader issues of statehood and representation.
He challenged the top-down governance approach from New Delhi, which has historically overshadowed local voices and aspirations in the state's political landscape.
MIYC hailed Bimol Akoijam as a transformative political leader capable of reshaping Centre-state relations and advocating for a more inclusive and responsive governance framework for the Northeast.
His emergence signals a potential shift towards greater autonomy and recognition of regional identities within the Ind ian federal structure.
Looking forward, his speech has galvanised support across social media platforms and garnered widespread public attention, signalling a growing demand for a re-evaluation of Centre's approach towards its northeastern states.
His advocacy for rebuilding Manipur's "Idea" and restoring its fractured identity has struck a chord with many who seek equitable development and respect for diverse cultural heritages within India.
