Fugitive convict awarded 10 years RI

The special court of ND & PS, Manipur awarded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment to one Md Safikur Rahman, who had been absconding after conviction by the same court in a drug haul case.
During the sentence hearing of the case, special public prosecutor (PP) M Raichand placed before the special court (ND & PS) Manipur that Safikur Rahman (42) son of late Md Amu of Lilong Tairenmakhong went hiding immediately after he was convicted by the same court on November 11, 2022.However, a team of Lilong police station nabbed Safikur Rahman on June 1 this year and produced before the court, the special PP said and prayed for awarding more than the minimal punishment prescribed as per Section 21 (C) of ND & PS Act based on offence and act of the convicted person.
As per the case dossiers, sentence hearing could not be conducted even though the court convicted Safikur Rahman on November 11, 2022 and issued warrant against two sureties, who gave assurance of producing the convicted person before the court.
However, the convict was arrested by a team of Lilong police station recently and kept in police custody since then.
After hearing the submission made by the special PP, the court pronounced sentence for Md Safikur Rahman, which included 10 years rigorous imprisonment and penalty of Rs 1 lakh payable within six months.
The court also announced that Md Safikur Rahman's jail term will be extended for one more year if he is unable to pay the fine within the stipulated time and further ruled that Safikur Rahman's sentence period will be commuted by 125 days, as he remained under judicial custody during the trial of the case.
