Imphal, March 02 2025:
A day-long sensitisation workshop on "Social Issues of Kangleipak (Manipur): Women and Child Protection" was organised by CLK at Manipur Press Club on Sunday with MCPCR chairman Keisham Pradeep-kumar, MSCW former chairperson Dr Binota Meinam, retired District and Sessions Judge A Noutuneshwari and CLK president Ch Pakpi Chanu as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, advocate Dr Ch Narendra highlighted that amid the crisis situation, when people in the valley are unable to visit the hills and are forced to take the flight, equal emphasis should be on addressing crimes against women and children, as they are particularly vulnerable in such times.

"Although there are laws in place to safeguard the rights of women and children, these rights often remain neglected by those responsible for enforcing them," he said, adding that instead of only discussing laws related to upholding women and children's rights, it is more important now to address the degrading moral standards of the society.
While highlighting the instance of boys under 18 years of age smoking in public spaces, he pointed out the need for parents to educate their children at home about the illegality and health risks of smoking.
Dr Ch Narendra also noted that there was a time when women maintained a certain distance, even with their lovers, and did not engage in intimate behaviour.
However, this trend has now disappeared, which he believes is having negative impact on the traditional fabric of Manipuri society.
He stressed the importance of preserving aspects of the past, such as our ways of dressing, eating and the ideologies of Manipuri society, at least to some extent.
While pointing out the need to strengthen women's position in the present era, the advocate mentioned that in America, women often carry pistols in their Handbags to protect themselves.
Although this trend is not seen in Manipur, he noted that there may come a time when such measures are needed for self-defence.
According to the law, a woman has the right to kill someone if she is defending herself from an attempted rape or murder, he said.
