Jiribam, October 26 2024:
As the situation in Jiribam district remains unease, Kuki and Hmar militants have set ablaze a house and a farmhouse belonging to Meetei individuals in Jiribam district.
The attack, which took place around 8:30 pm on Friday, targeted properties in Mounkangthol and Bhutangkhal villages.
The house, located in Mounkangthol in the adjoining area of Jiribam and Pherzawl districts, belonged to a local resident named Ibomcha, while the farmhouse in Bhutangkhal was owned by Jiten.
Both structures were completely destroyed in the blaze, with community members expressing deep concern over the escalating tensions in the region.
Several Meetei houses, farmhouses and shops have been burned by Kuki and Hmar militants in the district in the last couple of months after district administration and civil societies managed to bring an uneasy calm.
Jiribam, which remained peaceful for over a year since the violence began on May 3, witnessed sudden escalation in June this year after a 59-year-old Meetei farmer was killed by Kuki militants on June 6 .
Last week, on October 19 morning, Kuki and Hmar militants launched an attack on Borobekra police station using high calibre assault rifles and bombs, resulting in extensive damage to the police station and at least three homes belonging to Meetei residents.
The attack came a day after Hmar Village Volunteers, an armed organisation formed recently served a "quit notice" to Meetei residents to vacate the Barak Circle area.
During the attack, Kuki militants destroyed two houses and set fire to another, with appliances and rooms in the police barracks, which also serve as relief camps for displaced Meetei families, sustaining damage.
