Students, teachers plea for disturbance-free Education Zone

In connection with the 19th Disturbance Free Education Zone Demand, several schools and colleges in Imphal West district under the initiative of Coordinating Committee on Disturbance Free Education Zone staged sit-in appeal in front of their respective schools.
During the protests, students and teachers also raised slogans against excessive monetary demands on educational institutions and politicising education by the government, demand for framing law to ensure academic period not less than 220 days, government to implement guidelines in timely manner, no to any corruption, nepotism or favouritism in education, and no to any interference in education.
Speaking on the sidelines, one of the protesting students pointed out that the prevailing situation in Manipur has been distracting students from their academic tasks with the problem further compounded as armed groups, whether real or fake, making exorbitant demands on educational institutions consequently hindering their studies.
As such, the student appealed all to stop such acts immediately and allow the students to study in peace for they are the future pillars of the society and country.
In this regard, DESAM secretary general and Committee member N Thoithoiba said that many poster campaigns have been launched with regard to the Demand Day programme, which commenced on July 5.As such, the sit-in appeal will continue till Saturday, he informed.
Students of Hijam Irawat Memorial (HIM) Public School Langjing Achouba also staged a sit-in appeal inside the school campus on Thursday while teachers under government of Manipur"s ZEO, Zone-1 Imphal West staged sit-in protest against "exorbitant" monetary demand to school teachers at the Yumnam Kesho community hall, Naoremthong Bazar on Thursday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the protest, Sinam Nodia Upper Primary School headmistress in-charge Laishram Dhaneshori reasoned that the protest was staged as per the resolution adopted in a meeting at SCERT hall on July 19.The exorbitant monetary demand on education sector has caused restlessness among the teachers.
How teachers could guide students to the right path when their minds could not be focused, she asked, while stating that they have been extending all possible help to relief camps and others since the conflict broke out on May 3, 2023.Moreover, they also donate to those who come to school for help, she added.
Dhaneshori further said that the education atmosphere is terribly disrupted owing to threat and monetary demands.
While urging not to make such demands, she maintained that they will continue to extend all possible help.
