TMNL President among four killed in road mishaps

Ukhrul/Imphal, October 24 2024: Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (TMNL/Tangkhul Youth Council) president Themmaso Tallanao from Longpi Kajui village and assistant general secretary Masothing Mungshon from Seikhor village, died in a road accident that took place near Shingcha village in Kamjong district on Thursday.

The accident occurred around 10:30 am when the Bolero they were traveling in reportedly veered off the road and fell about 50 feet into a gorge.

Reports said that both Tallanao and Mungshon died instantly, while the driver, Mingyao Raising from Theiva village, sustained critical injuries.

The trio was en route to a public meeting in Kamjong, organised by Raizan Katamnao Long, in connection with the NSF Reconnaissance Mission to assess the abrogation of the Free Movement Regime initiated by the government in the border region.

Themmaso Tallanao is survived by his wife and three children.

The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained, though reports suggest the vehicle might have lost control while navigating a turn.

Emergency responders including Kamjong district administration, police and medical team transported the deceased to Ukhrul District Hospital for medical procedures before their bodies were returned to their homes.

Later, in the evening the bodies were brought to the TNL Hall in Ukhrul town, where their mortal remains will be honoured overnight.

In a statement, Wungsorin Ragui, president of Hunphun Katamnao Long (HKL), expressed condolences, stating, "Themmaso Tallanao and Masothing Mungshon lost .their lives while fulfilling their duties as civil society leaders, advocating against the scrapping of the Free Movement Regime in Naga areas".

Meanwhile, in memory of the departed leaders, Tangkhul civil society organizations have announced closure of all businesses and educational institutions from 9 am to 12 noon on Friday, with a joint condolence service for the duo planned at Ukhrul Town Hall at 9 am.

On the other-hand, two people were killed and two others left injured in a road accident along Sendra road under Moirang police station on Thursday night.

The two deceased have been identified as Akoijam Premchand (26) s/o Priyo and Irengbam Manao alias Bisheshwor (22) s/o (L) Ibomcha, both from Tronglaobi Makha Leikai.

The two injured have been identified Konjengbam, Bipin (26) s/o Chandra Singh of Tronglaobi Makha Leikai and Hemam Haridas (24) s/o Khomdon of Moirang Okshongbung Makha Leikai.

According to a police report, a speeding Maruti Swift car (MN 05 A-8327) drove into Loktak Lake along Sendra road around 9.30pm Thursday.

On receiving news of the incident, a team of Bishnupur district police and commandos arrived at the scene and rescued the occupants of the car.

However, the driver of the car, Premchand and the front seat passenger Manao alias Bisheshwor died on the spot, while Bipin and Haridas, who were seated in the back, were saved.

Both the two deceased and the two injured were taken to the district hospital for treatment, the report informed.
