Centre urged for CBI probe into 'militants-politicians' nexus in Meghalaya

Shillong, June 24 2014: Independent legislator and former minister Saleng A Sangma has urged the union home minister Rajnath Singh to institute a CBI inquiry into the alleged "militants-politicians" nexus in Meghalaya to unravel the truth of such nexus as he said even the head of the state-chief minister- had claimed that such nexus exists in the state.

In a letter written to Rajnath Singh, copies of which were also given to Meghalaya Governor, union minister of state for home, home ministry officials and NPP Tura MP Purno A Sangma, Salseng wanted the intervention of the union government as he said the Meghalaya government has mismanaged handling of the militancy related problems in Garo hills.

Saleng said, "I am writing this to express my disquiet and distress on the prevailing law and order situation in the Garo hills region in the state of Meghalaya as the law and order situation, arising out of the growing militancy problem, has affected the daily lives of the citizens residing in the five districts of Garo hills.

I feel that your kind and immediate intervention is the need of the hour to ensure peace and normalcy.

These activities have largely affected the socio-economic activities in the region" .

Saleng informed that the functioning of the Congress government in Meghalaya has totally collapsed and the entire government machinery has miserably failed in maintaining law and order and protecting the citizens and their interest.

He said," To substantiate these claims, I would like to put forward a few points which are relevant and important to be brought to your notice" .

Saleng said that militancy has crossed all limits as the general public, including government officials, bank employees, prominent personalities, traders and himself have been its victim.

Citing an example, he informed that in 2012 a grenade was hurled which exploded but with God's grace his family was unharmed.

He said, "The militants had even planted an RDX explosive to kill me which I fortunately escaped.

While these incidents had shocked every concerned citizen, and condemnations poured in from various quarters, to my surprise, the head of the government did not even react" .

Referring to chief minister Mukul Sangma, Saleng said that the head of the government had also claimed that there are enough evidences to prove the prevalence of a politico-militant nexus in the state, but no action has been initiated in this regard.

Saleng brought to the notice of the union home minister that a militant, allegedly belonging to the ANVC (B), who had revealed the names of politicians supposedly maintaining links with militant groups was killed the very next day after making such serious revelations.

Saleng said that he wanted to bring to the home minister notice that threats were issued to a section of legislators, including him, in 2011 to support a particular political leader or otherwise, all of them would be barred from entering the Garo Hills.

Saleng also brought to the notice of Rajnath the rampant killings, rapes, abductions and atrocities on women taking place in the entire Garo hills region.

He said, "There are around a dozen militant groups operating in the Garo hills at this point of time, which has crippled normal life" .

Saleng said given this background he request the union government to intervene and resolve the militancy issue by initiating a CBI probe to unravel the truth into the alleged politico-militant nexus in the state.
