291 road mishaps, 75 casualties in Thoubal district in 2024

Thoubal, January 23 2025:
Out of the 291 road accidents reported statewide, which led to 75 fatalities and 698 injuries in 2024, Thoubal alone accounted for 72 accidents, resulting in nine casualties and 129 injuries, with 66 classified as serious.
The data was compiled by office of the Thoubal SP from six police stations namely Khongjom, Heirok, Thoubal, Lilong, Yairipok and Nongpok Sekmai.
Thoubal police station registered 32 cases, the highest in the district whereas Nongpok Sekmai police station reported no accidents.
Cases registered in Thoubal police station include three deaths, and 4 injuries.
Additionally, 50 underage individuals were injured in accidents under its jurisdiction.
Khongjom police station reported eight accidents, with two fatalities and one suffering serious injury.
Another 19 underage individuals were injured in accidents within its jurisdiction.
Lilong police station recorded 18 accidents, with three deaths, one serious injury and 35 underage individuals injured while Yairipok police station recorded 13 accidents, one casualty and injury to 23 underage individuals.
In comparison to 2023, which saw 98 accidents, five deaths and 62 serious injuries, year 2024 has been a more tragic year for the district in terms of road safety.
A total of 117 underage individuals were injured in accidents in the said year.
The primary causes of accidents in Thoubal are attributed to reckless driving, speeding along NH-102 (Imphal-Moreh Road), unauthorised dismantling of road dividers, driving under the influence of liquor or drugs and general traffic violations.
Over the last five years, 3126 road accidents were reported across Manipur, with 834 fatalities, according to Manipur Traffic Control Police.
In response to the rising number of accidents, the district's transport office has initiated a Road Safety Month and is strictly enforcing fines for traffic violations.
An awareness programme was held on January 8, at Lilong Market as part of National Road Safety Month.
During the event, Thoubal DC Ahanthem Sunash highlighted that 1063 people sought treatment at Thoubal District Hospital in 2024 due to road accidents, with 9 fatalities among the injured.
