Need to promote Shumang Leela in right direction: Shivdutta Luwang

In the present situation of unrest and uncertainty in Manipur, there is a need to promote and develop Shumang Leela art form in the right direction, said Meisnam Shivdutta Luwang, founder member secretary of Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board.
He was speaking at the closing function of the month-long Shumang Leela Workshop on "Moirang Parva Tradition" organised by the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council at Th Iboyaima Shumang Leela Sanglen, Palace Compound.
The workshop, now in its 32nd edition this year, was participated by many artists including children.
Certificates were distributed to the participants to encourage them.
Shivdutta Luwang, who is also the editor of Pandam Paoche, said that the workshop was initiated by late Shumang Leela doyen Naba Wareppa with the aim of developing the art form.
Though Shumang Leela artistes face various criticisms when they come out in public, all those associated with the art form have a responsibility to work wholeheartedly to take society in the right and positive direction, he added.
Sougrakpam Hemanta, project director of the workshop, said that resource persons well versed in Shumang Leela and theatre imparted training on various topics during the workshop.
Chief guest, social worker Jackson Kongbam lauded the role of artistes in promoting art and culture of the State.
The Council's workshop is valuable and will guide future generations towards the right path, he said.
Former president of Manipur State Shumang Leela Council Ph Gunachandra Sharma presided over the function.
