Imphal, June 22 2024:
Manipur University of Culture vice chancellor Paonam Gunindro has remarked that the trend of making extravagant expenses in all rituals or ceremonies right from birth to death, is heavily affecting the economy of the state.
A two-day discourse on 'Pokpadagi Siba Phaobagi Thouramsingda Honglakliba Machat Amadi Mashina Khunaigi Semnitlonda Piriba Cheitheng', which is being organised by Organising Committee was inaugurated at the conference hall of MIMS, Manipur University on Saturday.
Speaking as chief guest of the inaugural function, VC Paonam Gunindro said that almost every community in the world has their own customs and beliefs, along with rituals and ceremonies associated with the same.
These rituals and ceremonies reflect the custom, tradition and culture of that community, in addition to the community's identity.
However, with the passage of time, a trend of extravagance has set in.
This has been impacting the economy in the sense that low-income families are having a difficult time in performing the simplest ritual.
On top of this, there have been new changes to the indigenous way such as cutting of cakes during weddings, which is completely alien to the state's culture.
This is something the future generations would question about, he said and thus, the discourse to understand how to stop this trend or lower its influence, and improve the economic conditions while preserving the legacies of our forefathers, is a good step in the right direction.
The inaugural function was also attended by Sana Konung custom secretary and Organising Committee chairman Thokchom Ibohal Meitei as president and The South East Asia Cultural Organisation advisor Akham Langol as guest of honour.
