Imphal, November 19 2024:
Lilong MLA Md Abdul Nasir staged a protest in the national capital on Monday, urging the Central government to take decisive action to address the prolonged crisis in the state.
The MLA also submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the gravity of the situation and demanding immediate intervention to prevent further loss of life and property.
The memorandum comes in the wake of the brutal killing of three women and three children, including an eight-month-old, held hostage for several days.
Expressing deep anguish over the incident, Nasir described the act as "a heinous crime that has crossed all levels of humanism and barbarity" .
He condemned the violence against vulnerable groups, emphasising that such acts are "a shameful affair in the eyes of the world" and a violation of accepted global norms.
"Non-sparing of women and children in this conflict and killing them is against the accepted law all over the world," stated Nasir.
He conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with the people of Manipur, who are reeling from the tragic loss of innocent lives.
In the memorandum, Nasir called on the Prime Minister to publicly denounce the incident in the strongest terms and outlined several actions for the government to consider, including declaring the perpetrators as terrorists for abducting and killing women and children, passing a parliamentary resolution condemning the killings to reinforce India's stance against terrorism, ensuring the swift arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible, and amending or passing legislation regarding Article 3 of the Indian Constitution to protect the 2,000-year territorial integrity of Manipur.
Wabagai MLA Dr Usham Deben and Hiyanglam MLA Dr Yumnam Radheshyam also voiced their concerns over the evolving situation.
Both legislators emphasised that their roles as MLAs were secondary to the greater priority of safeguarding Manipur's integrity and ensuring the welfare of its people.
Dr Deben, in a statement, emphasised that safeguarding the state s integrity is more important than his position as MLA.
He reiterated that the state government is making every effort to resolve the ongoing crisis and has been urging the Centre to withdraw its recent decision to re-impose AFSPA in areas under six police stations.
He also expressed sorrow for the families of the six civilians, including three children, who were abducted and kiljed by Kuki narco-terrorists in Jiribam district.
He assured the public that the government is committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice while working to restore law and order.
In response to public call about his stance on the situation, Dr Deben pledged to resign from his MLA position and join the people in protecting the state, as and when necessary.
The MLA reaffirmed to work alongside the people of his constituency to safeguard the state and its indigenous people.
Hiyanglam MLA Dr Yumnam Radheshyam also stressed that he would never prioritise his MLA post over the integrity of the state and its people.
In his statement, he reaffirmed commitment to working with the public to restore peace and normalcy, along with stating that he has been pursuing the Centre to address the crisis.
The MLA declared he would act according to the will of the people if the Centre fails to respond positively to their demands soon.
Wangoi MLA Kh Loken also asserted that he will never shy away from his responsibilities as a public representative and fully endorse any public decision made in response to the ongoing crisis.
He said that he will go to the frontline and face the threats if the situation warrants.
In a statement, the MLA also condemned the recent abduction and murder of three women and three children by Kuki narco-terrorists, calling it one of the most shocking incidents in the state's 19-month-long turmoil.
He criticised both the central and state governments for their failure to take decisive action against the growing terror activities.
