Proposal for upgrading Manipur State Museum sent

Art and Culture commissioner M Joy Singh has informed that a proposal has been forwarded to the Ministry of Culture to upgrade Manipur State Museum with new, additional infrastructure to draw the attention of tourists.
The International Museum Day was observed under the theme of 'Museum for Education and Research', by Manipur State Museum under the aegis of Art and Culture Department at the auditorium of Manipur State Museum, here, on Saturday.
The observance was attended by Art and Culture commissioner M Joy Singh as chief guest and Art and Culture director K Dinamani Singh as president.
In his speech, commissioner M Joy Singh informed that a proposal has been forwarded to the Ministry of Culture for increasing the number of galleries from six to eight and also set up additional infrastructures.
Highlighting the importance of observing International Museum Day, he said that the day was first observed by International Council of Museum on May 18, 1877.He went on to say that museums play an important role in chronicling the origin and development of human civilisation over the course of time.
The artefacts and documents displayed/stored in the museums greatly benefit students and researchers, he stated, while appealing to all sections of the society to help in promotion of museums.
Manipur State Museum curator Mrinashree Mairembam said that museum is crucial in preservation and promotion of cultural heritage.
She then urged all to extend their support in promoting the State Museum.
During the observance, Art and Culture ex-director Dr K Sobi-ta spoke on the topic of Museum is visual educational centre'; and Manipur University Anthropology Department ex-professor Dr W Nabakumar on Museum and cultural heritage' .
As part of the observance, items used by Durbar members during the reign of Churachand Maharaj and photographs of gold items recovered from Cheirao Ching and Lamboi Ching in 1999 were put on display.
