Imphal, April 15 2025:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, and alleging that the legislation is both unconsti tutional and unsecular.
The petition was filed on Tuesday by MPCC working president and former MLA Md Fajur Rahim, and former MLA Md Amin Shah, with MPCC legal department vice-president and spokesperson advocate Dr Rabi Khan acting as local counsel.
Addressing the media, Dr Rabi Khan said that the apex court may conduct a motion hearing on the petition on Wednesday.
He noted that several Congress leaders, political parties, and concerned individuals across the country have also approached the Supreme Court against the amended Act.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, introduced and passed by the NDA government, has triggered nationwide protests, with opposition parties accusing the Centre of undermining constitutional safeguards and minority rights.
Dr Rabi Khan asserted that the MPCC stands firmly with the national leadership of the Congress in opposing the legislation, demanding that the Act which is in violation of constitutional provisions and principles of secularism, must be repealed.
The Congress party would continue to resist any legislation that challenges the secular and democratic fabric of the country, he said.
