33 AR honoured for flood relief efforts

The 33 Assam Rifles has been honoured with the World Congress on Disaster Management - Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDM-DRR) Award 2024 for its outstanding response during the Manipur floods caused by Cyclone Remal in June and July 2024.The award ceremony took place on Wednesday, at the Constitution Club of India, New Delhi.
Union minister of commerce and industry Piyush Goyal conferred the award on 33 Assam Rifles for their tireless efforts in rescuing flood victims.
Commandant of 33 Assam Rifles, Colonel Radha Krishna accepted the award on behalf of his battalion.
In a statement, PRO IGAR (S) recounted that the devastating floods in May, June, and July 2024 caused widespread destruction across the Imphal valley, submerging vast areas and displacing thousands of residents.
In response to the crisis, 33 Assam Rifles mobilised 47 flood relief columns and conducted relentless rescue operations under hazardous conditions.
The Assam Rifles and Indian Army launched OPERATION JAL RAHAT I and II in June and July 2024, during which 33 Assam Rifles rescued a total of 3,445 flood victims.
The unit also provided immediate healthcare through Mobile Medical Clinics and facilitated the supply of relief materials to stranded individuals, offering vital assistance during the disaster.
Among the battalion's heroic efforts were the night evacuation of 21 critically ill ICU patients from Raj Medicity hospital and the rescue of a 73-year-old paralytic man trapped in 13 feet of floodwater in Nagaram.
These acts exemplified the battalion's unwavering dedication to protecting lives and fostering resilience in disaster-stricken areas.
The recognition by the World Congress on Disaster Management underscores the critical role of 33 Assam Rifles in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
As the region continues its recovery from the devastating floods, the Assam Rifles remains a pillar of strength and support, exemplifying its role as the Sentinels of the North East', the statement added.
