Flood-hit families to receive Rs 10K each

The state cabinet has decided to provide Rs 10,000 to the families affected by the recent flood in the valley as immediate relief measures.
It also decided to form a cabinet sub-committee to oversee the resettlement of all those displaced due to the Kuki-Meetei conflict, while further deciding to hold elections to Autonomous District Councils (ADCs), panchayats and municipalities in September this year.
On Thursday, Chief Minister N Biren Singh chaired meeting of the state cabinet which figured discussions on the recent surge of tension in Jiribam district, including the murder of a Meetei farmer by suspected Kuki militants, torching of houses in Meetei villages and steps to be taken up by the government to contain the situation.
According to a source, the cabinet approved payment of Rs 10,000 to each of the flood-affected family as immediate relief and for the deputy commissioners of the districts concerned to complete assessing the damage caused by the floods within a week.
On the other hand, in accordance with Rule No 13 of Rules of Business, Government of Manipur, the cabinet decided to form a cabinet sub-committee to assess and resettle people displaced by the violence and presently staying in different relief camps.
In this regard, cabinet special secretary Ningthoujam Geoffrey on Thursday issued an order and members of the sub-committee appointed.
Works and Youth affairs & Sports minister Govindas Konthoujam has been appointed as the chairperson of the cabinet sub-committee, with Water Resources and Relief & Disaster Management minister Awangbow New-mai, Medical, Health & Family Welfare and IPR minister Dr Sapam Ranjan, and Animal Husbandry & Veterinary and Transport minister Khashim Vashum as members, and commissioner cum secretary (home) Gyanprakash as member secretary.
The functions of the cabinet sub-committee include identifying suffering and inconveniences faced by the displaced persons staying in relief camps, carrying out the required measures, resettling them and monitoring the rehabilitation processes, in addition to identifying locations for constructing temporary houses for them.
The cabinet sub-committee's report would then be submitted to the chief minister.
The cabinet also decided to hold the elections to ADCs, panchayats and municipalities in the month of September.
However, with regard to the ADC election, the opinion of Hill Areas Committee (HAC) will be taken into account, the source conveyed.
