Curriculum and syllabus committee meeting held

Imphal, June 10 2022: State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT) on Friday convened a state level curriculum and syllabus committee meeting to thoroughly discuss about the chapters/lessons to be added or omitted from SCERT, Manipur syllabus when National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 is implemented.

The meeting held at SCERT multipurpose hall, Lamphelpat was attended by SCERT commissioner H Gyanprakash, head of office Jim Golden Thingujam, Education (S) director L Nandakumar and directorate of Language Planning and Implementation director Th Chitra as presidium members.

Speaking at the meeting, Jim Golden Thingujam stressed the need to relook at the three-language formula of National Curriculum Framework (NEF), 2005 and to add more historical facts of Manipur in text books and make SCERT curriculum and syllabus more complete when NEP, 2020 is implemented.

As such, the meeting has been convened to discuss the matter, he explained.

During the technical session, experts and academicians pointed out that learning through their mother tongues by children of different ethnic groups of the state should be considered as a vital right of the people.

Just like the outrage pf Manipuris when the centre tried to impose Hindi in the state, the different tribal communities in the state would not be happy if imposition of only Meeteilon is done without giving the opportunity to learn the different recognised tribal languages, they said.

Regarding the inclusion of contents of local history in SCERT syllabus, the experts highlighted the need to make young students familiarise with topography, settlement and composite history of the land.

There is also the need to include the good things of the indigenous culture and tradition, the experts opined.

The meeting discussed several agendas including Local context and flavour and their relevancy, Revisiting on the three language formula of NEF-2005' and Integration of more historical facts in the text-books".

The meeting was also at tended by retired commissioner Rk Nimai, Homen Thangjam, Dr Dhanabir Laishram and Ningthouja Lancha among others.
