Indian Organ Donation Day 2024 observed

Imphal, August 03 2024:
Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal observed "Angdaan Mahotsav" (Indian Organ Donation Day 2024) at the Jubilee Hall of RIMS, here, on Saturday.
Manipur University vice chancellor Prof Naorem Lokendra Singh and RIMS director Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma were respectively chief guest and president of the function, which was also attended by medical superintendent Prof N Sanjib Singh and dean (Academics) Prof Brogen Singh Akoijam as guest of honours.
In his address, Prof Naorem Lokendra Singh expressed gratitude to the organising committee for associating him with important event.
He appreciated the value of life, and said that is one of the most precious gifts of god and we must do whatever is necessary to save our life.
Stating that the education system nowadays has reached the inflection point, he said that the availability of information and awareness is abundantly found on the internet, which is an easy method to obtain knowledge about organ donation.
The awareness for organ donation should be a continuing process and should keep on increasing by disseminating information to every section of our society, he asserted, while stressing that we must try to encourage everybody to donate organ voluntarily as it is the most generous gift anyone Could give to save lives.
RIMS director Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma said that organ donation is a noble act, offering hope and new lease of life to those suffering from the end stage organ failures.
He continued that one organ donor can save upto 8-9 lives.
Thus, doctors and health workers should play the role of educator to bridge the gap existing between those needing transplants and available donors.
Online registration can also be done through the website of National Organ and Tissues Transplant Organization (NOTTO), he informed.
Conveying the message that "No organ can be donated without the consent of the person", he stated that donors need to first discuss the information with the family.
He also administered the pledge of organ donation to the faculty member, staff, students and all the stakeholders present at the observance.
During the observance, resource persons talked about organ donation.
Later, organ donors were felicitated and honoured with gifts, followed by a slogan writing competition and distribution of prizes for the same.
The observance was also attended by principals of Dental College and College of Nursing, HODs, faculty members, nursing officials, staff and students of RIMS, Imphal; students from Manipur University, Canchipur, and Dhanamanjuri University.
On the other hand, Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal and MOHAN Foundation jointly observed Indian Organ Donation Day 2024 at the board room of JNIMS medical superintendent on Saturday.
The observance was attended by JNIMS MS Prof Kh Lokeshwor, MOHAN Foundation programme officer Monika Laishram and other JNIMS officials.
