Imphal, October 28 2008: Street vendors of Khwairamband market who came back to occupy their usual spots today against the Government's eviction order were driven back by the police.

A team of police led by Imphal West SSP L Kailun mounted a vigil around Khwairamband market for any street vendors coming back to do their business at road sides since early morning.

The stepped-up pre-emptive measure was taken up after the street vendors announced to resume their business at road sides from today till Ningol Chakkouba day.

The streets vendors after being driven off from Khwairamband market tried to storm the office of Imphal Municipal Council on October 16 and 17 in protest.

Since then they have been appealing to allow them do their business at their usual spots during the festive days till Ningol Chakkouba.

But, contrary to their appeal, the street vendors were not only driven off by police but their wares including vegetables were scattered away.

According to police sources, the street vendors were first asked to leave their spots using loud speakers.

But the street vendors remained adamant forcing the police personnel to drive them away physically.

While decrying their eviction, the street vendors have been complaining about the presence of many unauthorised vendors in the existing temporary market sheds.

They have also been questioning the rationale of allowing non-local vendors occupy the streets just behind the City police station when they are being evicted.
