Imphal, August 27 2026: All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) president Lukram Malangba has urged the Government to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur before conducting the population census.

He made the statement during the observance of the 61st Hunger Marchers' Day-cum-closing ceremony of the regeneration month.

Addressing the gathering, he said the Government preparing to conduct the census without first addressing the demand to identify illegal immigrants is unfortunate.

Pointing out that Manipur has remained in a state of unrest since May 3, 2023, he urged the Government to update the NRC first.

Tributes paid on Hunger Marchers' Day

He said Hunger Marchers' Day is observed annually to commemorate the massive people's uprising in Manipur in 1965 against an artificial food shortage, during which four persons were killed.

As part of today's observance, floral tributes were offered at the memorial of the four martyrs at Pishum Chingamacha after the AMSU flag was hoisted.

Later, a large number of people marched to Bheigyachandra Open Air Theatre (BOAT), where a meeting was held.

The programme was attended by former AMSU presidents Y Priyokumar and Birendra Chingakham, and Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) convenor YK Dhiren, among others.
