Emergency services suspended, many left helpless

Imphal, September 23 2025:
A large number of people in need of immediate medical attention were left totally helpless as even emergency services were suspended at many hospitals today.
Notably, Indian Medical Association (IMA), Manipur State Branch suspended all OPDs, routine OTs, elective surgeries and diagnostic test from 6 am of Tuesday to 6 am of Wednesday in protest against the assault of a doctor by a mob following the death of young woman at RIMS after delivering a baby.
Even though IMA Manipur State Branch said that emergency services were exempted from their agitation, many hospitals shut down even emergency services on Tuesday.
A number of people who came from near and far off places for immediate medical attention including victims of road accidents were left totally helpless as even emergency services were found closed.
While some of them went to other hospitals where emergency services were open, others had to go back home without receiving the much needed medical attention.
Notably, the State is currently facing a surge in Dengue cases.
Now people are questioning as to why even emergency services were closed while IMA Manipur State Branch categorically stated that their agitation would not affect emergency services.
Talking with The Sangai Express over telephone, some hospitals said that both OPDs and emergency services had been closed for today in protest against assaulting a doctor at RIMS.
Incidentally, medical practitioners today staged a protest demonstration under the aegis of IMA Manipur State Branch at their Lamphelpat complex.
IMA Manipur State Branch Secretary Dr Soram Gautam who also took part in the protest said that emergency services were not suspended because of the agitation.
Contrary to what the IMA Manipur State Branch Secretary stated, many hospitals suspended emergency services today and it left many people in need of emergency medical services totally helpless.
Meanwhile many people have pointed out that visiting a hospital is never a leisure or pleasure trip but a desperate necessity.
In some cases, delay in receiving medical attention for a few minutes costs precious lives.
Strangely, many hospitals, conveniently forgetting their professional ethics, shut even emergency services today.
This is sheer insensitivity, they said.
