Threats to ADC Members still persist : Dy CM

Imphal, June 23 2015 : Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam has stated that many elected ADC members have been facing threats of different kinds although it has been more than 20 days since the polling was held.

In a brief interaction with media persons by the sideline of the 35th death anniversary of Sanjay Gandhi at Congress Bhavan today morning, Gaikhangam stated that the situation is still volatile as intimidations from UG groups to elected candidates continue unabated.

He added UGs were directly interfering in the election process so that political parties backed by them could somehow form councils in all the six ADCs.

As the situation is quite disturbing, the State Government has been closely monitoring their activities and will do what is best for the people without hurting the sentiments of all people, he added.

Further he informed that elected candidates from other political parties can form the council in their respective districts, if they have the majority seats.

There will be no interference from the State Government as it is their right.

A concrete decision would be adopted soon so that all the six ADCs could be formed anew after considering all relevant legal points in consultation with the Chief Minister of the State.

When asked about what action would be taken against those ADC candidates who took help from UG groups, the Deputy CM stated that the State Government would consider all possible outcomes of their actions and their activities would be tackled through lawful means.

After all, the Indian democracy is highly liberal.

Had it been in other countries, he added, all those candidates who took help from UG groups would not have been allowed to contest the election.

Commenting on the indefinite economic blockade clamped on both the National Highways by a student organization, he stated that such 'indefinite' economic blockade is inhuman and also undemocratic which is against the natural and human law.

Such economic blockade will not only violate the basic human rights, but also invite an uprising from the public since the masses have had enough of such indefinite economic blockades.

Later he urged all the people who are sponsoring the economic blockade to consider all the possible outcomes and lift the indefinite blockade in the larger interest of all the people of the State.

On being enquired about rehabilitation of villagers who fled from their homesteads in the aftermath of the June 4 ambush where 18 personnel of 6 Dogra Regiment were killed while 11 others were injured at Paraolon village, near Moltuk, around 35 km to the West of Tengnoupal police station in Chandel district, the Deputy CM asserted that the State Government has been doing all it can to win the faith of the frightened villagers as normalcy has returned in the area.

"It would have been better if the district administration had reacted quickly after the attack," added Gaikhangam.
