Imphal, April 22: Two youths who were allegedly involved in beating to death a youth at Wabagai Thambal Chingya under Kakching PS last night after Thabal Chongba were lynched by the villagers today.

Detailing the incident that led to the murder of the youth last night, police sources said that the deceased youth along with a friend was returning home after attending a Thabal Chongba last night at Chingtham.

While returning they saw some people climbing an electric post.

When the two youths inquired what they were up to and who they were, they were attacked by the same people climbing the electric post, said police.

One of the youths was seriously injured while the other one, a Karate expert, managed to escape, said police.

The injured youth was one Maibam Tiken (20) son of Dilipkumar of Wabagai Chingya.

The grievously injured Tiken was taken to the Community Health Centre at Kakching but passed away at about 1 am today.

As words of the death of Tiken spread, furious people of his locality launched a man hunt and at about 10 am they saw four youths inside a field shed.

The enraged villagers pounced on the four youths and severely thrashed them, resulting in the death of two, said police.

The other two managed to escape.

One of the deceased youths has been identified as Ningthoujam Tengcha (23) son of Deben of Khongjom Mayai Leikai.

The other is suspected to be one Phanjoubam Khoijao of Tekcham bazar.

Kakching police have registered a case in connection with the incident.

Search Ops: Imphal East District Police conducted a mass cordon and search operation at KR Lane, Hatta and Golapati area at about 7 am today and rounded up around 1000 suspected persons for verification.

During verification, one of the suspects identified as Md Riya alias Riyajuddin (23) s/o of Md Lahuddin of Fundrei Makha Leikai was found to a member of INF and he was taken into police custody, police source said.

Five other persons have also been detained for further verification, the police source said, while informing that the remaining 994 persons were released as they were found to be innocent.
