Imphal, June 17 2025:
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has approved a proposal for construction of a four-lane National Highway from Imphal to Yaingangpokpi.
Earlier, a proposal was submitted to MoRTH for construction of a new National Highway from Imphal to Ukhrul via Yaingangpokpi and MoRTH has approved the Imphal-Yaingangpokpi section.
The existing Imphal-Ukhrul road is 87 Kms in length and the proposed National Highway from Imphal to Ukhrul would be shorter by 10 Kms.
Ukhrul AC MLA Ram Muivah has been working hard to get the new highway project approved.
At first, it was considered to take up the highway project in the form of an Externally Aided Project (EAP) .
As it would take a long time to get the project approved as an EAP, Ram Muivah approached MoRTH to construct the new National Highway.
Talking with The Sangai Express, Ram Muivah said that MoRTH has approved the Imphal-Yaingangpokpi section of the new highway and NHIDCL has already floated due tender process.
The 25 Kms long section from Imphal to Yaingangpokpi would pass through plain area.
Yaingangpokpi-Ukhrul section of the same highway will pass through a 500 metres long tunnel under Mahadev Hills.
Emerging from the tunnel near Thouna River, the highway will pass along plain area.
The same highway will pass over hills for just around 7 Kms before Ukhrul, Ram Muivah said.
The MLA said that he has been working hard to get approval from MoRTH from the Yaingangpokpi-Ukhrul section of the new highway.
