Imphal, February 17 2026: Even as the Government has undertaken various initiatives under the Imphal Smart City project, Old Assembly Road, which is just about 100 meters long, remains in a dilapidated state, causing significant inconvenience to the public.

Despite its strategic importance, the road has not been repaired for an extended period, leading to dust during dry weather and slushy conditions when it rains.

Important institutions like the Manipur State Cooperative Bank (MSCB), Hindi Parishad, Passport Seva Kendra (Imphal), the FCI regional office, and the Assembly Museum are located along the road.

Additionally, the road provides access to Thangal Keithel, making it a crucial route for visitors.

A rickshaw driver told The Sangai Express that Old Assembly Road, located on the northern side of Indira Park, has not been repaired for an extended period.

He highlighted that the dust generated from the road has become a significant problem for commuters.

He also pointed out that the scattered stones along the stretch, coupled with the dust, have caused significant inconvenience to travellers.

There were large potholes in the past, but they have been repaired, he added.

"People had hoped the road would be blacktopped after the potholes were fixed, but that hasn't happened," he sighed.

Passenger vehicles also frequently travel along the road, he said and continued that navigating the road with heavy loads is challenging, despite its short length.

Another person, who was on his way to MSCB, said that the road becomes muddy when it rains and dusty during the dry season.

The road has been in this problematic state for quite some time, he said.

Acknowledging the various road projects underway in Manipur, he expressed a desire for the authorities to repair Old Assembly Road as well.
