Imphal, May 16 2009: Panic gripped many patients even as one woman fainted when a hand grenade hurled by unidentified miscreants exploded inside the campus of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences at Lamphelpat here today.

On the other hand, in continued violence unidentified persons hurled hand grenades at two places and a man who had been undergoing treatment of injuries inflicted by bomb splinters has succumbed.

The incident of blast inside the RIMS campus took place at around 10.30 am today.

The bomb landed and exploded with a loud bang near the southern wall of the campus.

Although the site of the explosion was close to the pump house, and ENT and paediatrics wards of RIMS, a private hospital � Langol View Charitable Clinic, is also located just beyond the wall of the campus.

One 25-year old Koijam Bala Devi w/o of Rabi of Singjamei Brahmapur Leikai who came to the private hospital for a medical test fainted on hearing the sound of the explosion and was admitted to RIMS.

In connection with the bomb blast, Medical Superintendent of RIMS Dr Y Mohen informed that although there is no monetary demand or threat from any UG groups, the bomb exploded inside the RIMS campus.

The explosion which caused panic among many people including patients admitted to RIMS was very unfortunate, Dr Mohen said while appealing to all concerned to ensure such incidents do not recur.

Meanwhile, a BRTF labourer who has been undergoing treatment after being hit by bomb splinters following an explosion at T Minou located a little further from Moreh town along Indo-Myanmar border on February 11 afternoon has succumbed.

The deceased has been identified as Jamkhopao Haokip (48) of Moreh Ward no.2 .

The bomb reported went off while he was clearing bushes along the road.

With serious injuries caused by bomb splinters on his left leg, neck and right chest, Jamkhopao Haokip was first admitted to RIMS Hospital but later underwent treatment at Shija Hospital.

However, he succumbed to the injuries at Moreh PHC yesterday afternoon.

On the other hand, unidentified armed persons reportedly hurled a hand grenade residence of Kangujam Ningthemjao (50), who is the elder brother of Works Minister K Ranjit Singh at Keirak Khongnangkhong under Kakching PS in Thoubal district early morning today.

The hand grenade, however, did not exploded.

It was later picked up by the bomb experts of the Assam Rifles who detonated the same safely.

Unidentified armed persons also reportedly hurled a hand grenade at the Khagempalli residence of L Uttam, who is the Director of Manipur Science and Technology Council at around 8.30 am today.

Bomb experts of the State Police Dept have retrieved the unexploded bomb.
