Imphal, May 13 2026: All pharmacies in Manipur will be closed on May 20 as part of a Nationwide movement organised by the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) .

Speaking to the media at BT Road today, Thokchom Dijamani, general secretary of the Manipur Chemists and Druggists Association (MCDA), said the shutdown, however, will not include Jan Aushadhi Kendras, which sell generic medicines and in-house hospital pharmacies.

He said that the shutdown aims to urge the Government to stop the sale of medicines online, curb predatory pricing by corporate entities and prevent the distribution of spurious medicines.

Apart from closing pharmacies, protests will also be held to oppose the Government's policies and programmes, he said.

He said that the opening of e-pharmacies following a notification by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has led to indiscriminate access to antibiotics and habit-forming medicines, repeated use of a single prescription, and the sale of scheduled drugs through AI-generated prescriptions, among other concerns.

AIOCD has been urging the Government to restrict the sale of medicines through e-pharmacies, Dijamani added.

He went on to state that the sale of medicines at unreasonably low prices by corporate chains threatens the survival of small and medium-sized chemist shops.

Saying that the home delivery facility of medicines was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, he added that the practice, however, still continues and it creates opportunities for the sale of spurious medicines.

Dijamani stated that the indiscriminate sale of medicines could compromise public health.
