Students don black badges to mark 'Puya Mei Thaba'

Imphal, January 13 2023: Students have started donning black badges from today onwards ahead of the commemoration programme of Puya Mei Thaba (burning down of sacred scriptures of Manipur), the incident which is considered as the most atrocious and darkest event in the history of Manipur.

The commemoration programme will be observed on the 23rd day of Wakching month of Manipuri lunar calendar which falls on January 15, 2023 .

International Observation Committee on Puya Mei Thaba (ICOP) held its annual programme Amamba Numit (Dark Day) at Eternal Spring English School at Sekta, Imphal- East today.

At the function, ICOP co-convenor P Thakaba Meetei said that Puya Mei Thaba is the one of the most disheartening and unforgettable days in the history of Manipur.

He said that ICOP has been observing the Commemoration programme since 2011 with a belief to revive Puya.

Saying that Amamba Numit will be observed till January 15 at over 30 educational institutions by donning black badges, Thakaba maintained that the 294th commemoration programme of Puya Mei Thaba will be held at Kangla and Elangkhanpokpi Mamang Leikai on January 15 .

He informed that this year Maichou Ningshing Mana and Chingmi Tammi Nungshi Lipun Mana (awards) will be distributed to Late Elangbam Tompok and RS Dominic Ahao from Ukhrul respectively.

COHSEM Secretary Ch Biren, ICOP convenor Moirangthem Naokhamba Meetei, Eternal Spring English School governing body president Haobam Yaiskul Meetei and Principal Laishram Raghumani also attended the programme.
