Peace Memorial renovated ahead of Abe, Modi visit

Renovation and beautification works of the India Peace Memorial, Maibam Lotpa Ching and surrounding areas are going on in full swing in view of the proposed visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the memorial complex on December 17.Notably, a large number of Japanese soldiers were killed in Manipur during the Second World War.
In honour of the soldiers killed here, the Government of Japan built the India Peace Memorial and opened it to public on March 25, 1994 with the cooperation of Government of India.
Accompanied by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe would visit the memorial site on December 17 .

This would be the first that Prime Ministers of two countries visit the memorial site.
In view of the high profile visit, the State PWD has been renovating and beautifying the memorial complex in consultation with other departments.
Talking to The Sangai Express, PWD Chief Engineer Khuraijam Temba said that they have been renovating the memorial complex so as to make it more presentable in view of the two Prime Ministers' visit.
The brick footpath leading to the sanctum sanctorum of the memorial site has been broadened using courtstones.
A new path leading to the memorial stone which is inscribed with epitaphs in memory of the Japanese soldiers has also been constructed.
Earlier, the memorial stone could be hardly seen although it is not far away from the entrance gate, said the Chief Engineer.
The pulpit where the two Prime Ministers would lay wreaths has been decorated.
Moreover, the path leading to the Imphal Peace Museum has also been renovated and improvised by constructing steps.
The broken plaques of the Japanese temple located inside the memorial complex are also being repaired, Temba said.
Moreover, construction barricades and removal of garbage and waste materials from both sides of Tiddim road from the Imphal airport to Maibam Lotpa Ching are also going on, he added.
